Let's make some noise, shall we?

One of the most heavily used features on myplick is the ability to add music effects onto your presentation. Having that romantic country music playing just adds so much to the whole experience.

Today, doing this just becomes a whole lot easier, thanks to Tribe of Noise. Tribe of noise is a worldwide community connecting musicians & companies by sharing music legally & hassle free. That's a lot like what myplick is trying to do for presentations, isn't it? You are right and we realized it. Today, tribe of noise is providing an online music gallery that myplick members can browse and with a click of a button, have that music be embedded into your myplick presentation.

Now, go ahead and upload a presentation, click on browse music gallery and let's make some noise!

Our users have told us that it's hard to keep up with what's going on at myplick since we don't have email notifications. Well, at myplick, it's all about our users. So now we have it. You can subscribe to email notifications for comments on your plicks, comments on your user profiles, people subscribing to your plicks, etc. To edit all the notification options, go to your profile page and select it from there.

myplick adds tag cloud

Yay, myplick just added tag cloud, one of the standard web 2.0 features that we don't yet have. Until today that is! Now in addition to browsing by category, by language, and by date, you can also visually browse by tag cloud. Life is good, ain't it?

myplick becomes the first site to share Google presentations

Google released its cool online presentation service a few weeks ago, and I have been an avid fan ever since. The product itself is not fancy and probably doesn't have even 10% of the functionality that PowerPoint has. But those are the 10% that people actually use! And best of all, it has the collaboration features and online presence that place it well beyond what PowerPoint can do.

So today, it's with great excitement that I announce that myplick is jumping on the Google bandwagon to support sharing Google presentations. What does that mean? You give us the URL to your Google presentation, and we give you a myplick slideshow. With that, you can do a number of things that you can't do with Google presentations today.

1. You can now embed it in your blogs.
2. You can download a PDF representation of your presentation.
3. You can upload your presentation audio to be synchronized with the slides.
4. You can share your presentation with audiences from all over the world.

Now come on over, and put your Googly Presently on myplick!

MyPlick is mashable-ed!!

I'm so excited today. MyPlick has been covered by Mashable!, one of the best and biggest blogging sites that cover social networking news. You can see the blog entry here.

I was just going through the motions of monitoring our server log today, and found a user called Kristen Nicole signed up. Well, nothing unusual, just the name sounded real familiar. Anyway, I didn't think too much of it. Little did I know traffic started coming in. And a lot of it, at once! I was ecstatic. Thank you Mashable, and thank you Kristen :)

What if everyone votes?

Answer: we'll have a better president, but let's leave that to another day.

One of the most important things we want to accomplish with our site is to present the most interesting and relevant contents to our users right before their eyes. The less effort required to find the contents they want, the better. To that end, we designed our home page so that it mainly consists of a hot plicks list that is constantly updated based on user activities on our site. Of course, this is nothing new. Sites such as Digg and Reddit have been doing this for ages in the news reporting area.

But we want to do better. One of the problems we have found on sites such as Digg is the concentration of subjects that make the top page. Posts about Apple, iPhone, Ubuntu, Linux, Firefox, and Microsoft sucks make up a big portion of the top stories. This happens because only 5-10% of all the viewers are actively digging contents and thus the top stories will mostly reflect their tastes. Now what if everyone votes? Wouldn't the contents that come out of it be a lot more diverse and useful for the average viewers? We certainly think so.

That's why we have recently started to anonymously gather information while a user is viewing a plick. For example, we would know which slides a user viewed and how long he spent on each of those slides, and much much more. Of course, we never associate that information with a particular user, but given an aggregate view, we can get a pretty accurate picture on whether people liked a plick even if they don't do anything else. So instead of the usual 5% of users, all 100% of our users are constantly helping us to make our site better.
